You cannot get the points and the lap at the same time. It would make sense
to get the points, then get the lap.

you are the leader and eligible for points until you take pace and shelter
from the filed you are catching.

it is possible to hang off the back, get the bell, win the 1st place points,
then catch the filed and still fight for 2nd place too!

so to answer your question, if you have joined the field the front of the
field is the front of the race.

I have a question about points racing on the track. If a rider is off the
front, in the process of lapping the field, when are the ineligible to take
sprints.
For example:
Rider off the front, lapping the field, gets the bell for the 5 lap sprint,
then completes lapping the field before coming to the line with 5 to go.
Does the rider get the points for winning the sprint? Or does the rider need
to remain solo until after the line with 5 to go?

Thanks,
