For a while, the UCI did not allow them, so it had an impact on pros,
but not local racers other than the pros. Recently, the UCI decided to
allow them, so the problem is gone. The other issue is that there are
not many cross bicycle frames made to accommodate discs, and they are
heavier. As a general rule, cross courses do not have steep slopes, so
breaking is not much of an issue anyway. As a result, cantilever brakes
usually work fine for cross courses and are lighter.

Completely ignorant question here. :)

I've been to several cyclocross events as a spectator (not coordinated
enough to participate) and was surprised to see that no one uses bikes
with
disc brakes. Are they not permitted? Are they somehow uncool? Or
unsafe?
The wet, muddy conditions would seem a good fit for them.

Thanks to everyone who responded, on & off list. The consesus is that
particularly here in the North Wet, canti's have some major advantages.
There were disenting opinions of course; this _is_ OBRA. :D I bought
both
pairs of Craig's Tektro RPB CNC machined canti brakes, so I'm in
buisness!
